On June 21, I attended an unusual anniversary party. It was given for a dog named Lexi.
Last year, I fell in love with Lexi, who had been living at the Animal Protective Association (APA) for nearly six months. Something about her caught my attention. Perhaps it was the fact that she was six years old and had known a home prior to being taken to the APA by her own family; perhaps it was her eyes and her sweet face. Whatever attracted me, I set out on a mission to find her a home.
One year after her adoption, Lexi is happy and completely in love with Sue and Richard Willing, her adoptive parents. Plus, she’s gained not only weight, but muscle tone as well.
The following is the story that appeared in the July 2007 issue of Java Journal:
On June 20 as I reviewed the pages that would become the July issue of Java Journal, this space was yet to be filled with an update on Lexi. As I wondered what that update would be, the long-awaited call came from the APA. Lexi had a prospective home.
I gathered my purse, found my keys, and my son, Sam, and I rushed to the car and headed over to the APA. The description of the prospective family sounded wonderful, but would they want Lexi? Would Lexi want them? The answer is a resounding yes! Lexi is now the proud owner of Sue and Richard Willing, Richard’s mother, Elizabeth, and two other family members, Cooper, a 5-year-old Labrador Retriever and Tucker*, a 13-year-old Lab. Sue and I cried — Richard, Elizabeth and Sam kept it together.
After she hopped in Richard’s car, Lexi sat quietly in the back seat with her head held high to see out the window, watching us as the car pulled away — a very touching moment.
Shortly after Lexi arrived at her new home, she explored the surroundings with her “brothers” right behind her. She jumped up on all the furniture and bounced on the beds. While Lexi bounced, Cooper and Tucker sat, watching inquisitively and undoubtedly thinking, “Can she do that?”
Lexi spent the night in Sue and Richard’s room. She meandered into their bathroom and made her bed in the shower, quiet and comfortable.
I am grateful for the Willings for giving six-year-old Lexi a home; for the APA for caring for her for such a long time; and for the people who helped to spread the word that Lexi needed a home.
The APA does a great job of caring for St. Louis animals. They took good care of Lexi for nearly six months until the Willings adopted her. Please consider adopting from the APA, or making a monetary donation. The APA is located at 1705 Hanley Rd., close to Hwy. 40. (314) 645-4610.
*Tucker passed away in June, 2008.
