Holy Frijoles!!!
Cinco de Mayo St. Louis Returns to Cherokee Street
Saturday, May 3 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
For many, Cinco de Mayo or May 5, marks the emergence of patio parties, lackluster nachos and premixed margaritas at Mexican chain restaurants nationwide. But for those residing in the St. Louis bi-state region, the celebration of Cinco de Mayo represents a unification and tribute to St. Louis’ diversity.
Cherokee Street, known for its wealth of Hispanic culture and eclectic shops, serves as the ideal backdrop for the annual event, “Cinco de Mayo St. Louis,” Saturday, May 3 from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. The celebration takes place along historic Cherokee Street, between Nebraska and Iowa. The festival offers a unique mix of art, authentic food and drink as well as live music — all with that south-of-the-border flair!
This year's festival will headline the rhythms and beats of Latino artist, Javier Mendoza. Mendoza presents an acoustical blend of rock, pop and Latin with both English and Spanish lyrics, some selections of which have been featured on MTV’s Real World. Describing his music, Mendoza said, “Everything sounds very pure and very simple and earthy, but with underlying notes of pop electronica. I guess it’s what I am — I’m kind of a purist when it comes to many things.”
Additionally, the fiesta will offer musical highlights from St. Louis' number one funk and disco band, Boogie Chyld; the 8-piece Mexican band sensation, Tamborazo Mixteco; St. Louis Symphony’s trumpet player, Josh MacCluer in addition to live Mariachi.
“Party-goers are invited to take part in all that Cherokee Street has to offer,” said Jason Deem, Cinco de Mayo St. Louis event organizer. “Whether savoring authentic Mexican cuisine and beverages or visiting any of the diverse purveyors who call Cherokee Street home, we want them to be captivated by the culture and energy of Cherokee Street’s unique collection of retail sales, residential buildings and contemporary art spaces.”
Historic Cherokee Street is conveniently located near major highways. Plenty of area parking is available.
