As I watched the opening ceremony of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, I had many mixed thoughts. The creative ceremony was truly spectacular, but I can’t help but wonder if the smiles on the Geisha faces were somehow motivated by fear of making a mistake and thus losing their very lives as punishment. And why would Beijing be the chosen city for the Olympics, with it’s problems of human rights as well as pollution?
On the other hand, could the Chinese hosting of this world event have a positive influence on their city, their country, their leaders? Could the direct influences of our athletes on their young participants cause questions in the minds of the Chinese, enough to cause the wheel of positive change to begin to turn?
And as I watch the Tai Chi performers, I had to wonder if two thousand and eight people in the United States could duplicate the discipline required to form perfect lines in motion with the precision that we witnessed on opening night. Breathtaking sights wowed us in our homes.
So it seems we all have something to gain from participating, directly or passively, in the 2008 Summer Olympics. We’ll no doubt all be watching as the United States athletes represent our country.
In light of the summer olympics, this month's issue of Java Journal focuses on health and fitness. From the benefits of coffee to mind/body/spirit health, you’re sure to find something of interest. I’m particularly fond of stories regarding 50 as the new 30 — my kind of story, and you’ll find one on page 11. As I read the pages that will become the September issue, I’m reminded of my own health, and I’m pleased to say I’m getting back on track for optimal health.

                Kindly,

                Marian Rein
