“Where Are the Women?” This is a lecture series and exhibit examining women’s roles in music, art and society. Because women’s roles — especially those of African-American women — are left out of stories told by historians, these lectures will introduce women in everyday life at the turn of the nineteenth century in Missouri.
The traveling exhibit, “Morning to Night: Domestic Services in the Gilded South” will include musical performances, book signings, three lectures and a Century Bus / lecture tour beginning on April 17 and continuing until June 22 at the Scott Joplin House Historic Site, 2658 Delmar Blvd. An opening reception will be held from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m., on Sunday, April 20.
The following Sunday, April 27 at 2:00 p.m., Helen Walker Hill, a piano scholar, will explore and perform music by African-American women in “Spirituals to Symphonies: African-American Women Composers and their Music.”
In May, two activities are scheduled: “Women in Jazz” and the annual “Ragtime Rally.” “Women in Jazz,” on May 5 at 2:00 p.m. — featuring Madra Thomas accompanied by Reggie Thomas — will explore roles of St. Louis African-American female performances of the jazz culture through lectures, story-telling and song.
On Memorial Day, May 26, from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., come join the “Ragtime Rally” for the grand performances of ragtime pianists from several states, as well as educational programs, a silent auction, a display of historic automobiles and a mechanical musical display. These events will take place at the Scott Joplin House State Historic Site, 2658 Delmar Blvd, University City.
